International Anti-speciesist Petition
« By this declaration, I publicly state that I am anti-speciesist. »
I therefore call publicly upon governments and upon the competent national and international institutions to:
Repeal the laws and the full body of legal provisions, regional, national and international, which classify sentient non-human animals, in one way or another, along with their offspring and their secretions, as things, as movable property, or as exploitable or commercially tradeable products, within the legal meaning of these terms.
Adopt legislation, regional, national and international, granting functional legal personhood to sentient non-human animals so that they are legally recognised as non-human persons, subject to and holders of essential rights on the same footing as human animals, and accordingly:
Grant sentient non-human animals the legal status of non-human person, holder of the following essential rights:
- aThe inalienable right to live.
- bThe right not to be subjected to any form of violence, restraint, ill-treatment or exploitation, save for vital exceptions previously established by law for the human species and in accordance with the principles of strict proportionality and subsidiarity.
- cThe right no longer to be regarded as property, as a movable item of commerce.
- dThe right to belong to oneself, and no longer to be either the property or the belonging of another.
- eThe inalienable right to be regarded as a subject of rights endowed with functional non-human legal personhood.
- fThe right to functional legal representation in one’s own name.
- gThe right to bring legal proceedings in order to defend these essential rights, and to claim criminal penalties and financial compensation in the event of an infringement of these essential rights.
- hThe right to permanent, autonomous and independent political representation of the interests of non-human animals.
- iThe right to a protected territory and environment enabling them to meet the natural needs specific to their species.
Combat speciesist ideology by all legal and other means and, to that end, make it a criminal offence to incite speciesist hatred and all discrimination and violence arising from it, save for vital exceptions previously established by law for the human species and in accordance with the principles of strict proportionality and subsidiarity.
Ensure, to that end, permanent, autonomous and independent political representation, regional, national and international, tasked with protecting and defending the rights and interests of non-human persons in all circumstances.
Abolish animal exploitation everywhere and in every place, in whatever form it may take.
Prohibit the production, manufacture, sale, transport and promotion of products derived, directly or indirectly, from the body or secretions of a sentient non-human animal, save for vital exceptions previously established by law for the human species and in accordance with the principles of strict proportionality and subsidiarity.
Declare that sentience is the scientific and philosophical benchmark for granting every non-human person the essential rights set out above.
Promote political and philosophical sentientism.
Recognise that sentient non-human persons are endowed with sufficient consciousness to live their subjective lives in the first person, to have personal interests and preferences, that they can feel pain and suffering, and must accordingly be holders of the aforementioned essential rights so that these can be defended in law.
Educate future generations in respect for anti-speciesist values, in building an inter-species anti-speciesist zoopolis.
Cultivate and commemorate, with respect and compassion, in our collective memory, the atrocities and injustices perpetrated against other animal species since the dawn of humanity.
